The History of Jabal Al-Akhdar Cooperative

The Jabal Al Akhdar Cooperive was established in October 1999. It is the first women cooperative in the area of Wadi Rajib, Ajloun. It assists poor families through income generating activities, using its own financial resources or other donor contributions. It provides the local population with access to training and awareness - raising opportunities as well as addressing issues relevant to the community's needs.
Handcraft and sewing activities have been introduced to the women of the village with great success, becoming within a short time the most attractive activity of their cooperative. They produce bags, embroidered cushions, and traditional dresses among many other products.

If you would like to visit Jabal Al-Akhdar village where the cooperative is located, the ladies would be more than happy to welcome you and give you a guided tour. For more detailed view of the location and instructions on how to get there, please click on the map.

GTZ and WSMP

The WSMP provides support to rural communities by implementing small income generating projects through local organizations such as voluntary societies or cooperatives. The aim is to improve the people's livelihood with collective self-initiated efforts. Emphasis is given to female groups because women are generally more marginalized, have less opportunities and their important role in development and improvement of quality of live was not stressed enough in the past.
Till now, approximately 300 families have benefited from the project through implmenting 27 different types of activities. Chicken raising and slaughtering, Baladi eggs production and processing of kitchen and medical herbs, and beekeeping are among the most promising activities of the cooperative. New women groups are forming to meet the increased demand for handicrafts and new market channels are being opened.
